Multi-day tips part 6: dealing with Shin Splints

By Smarana Puntigam
27 June
splint.jpg
I think I might have a shin splint...

Shin splint is a very common injury among ultra runners. At the beginning it may be only recognizable through pain and a slight red spot, mostly starting from the ankle and moving slowly up the shin-bone. However, as it develops the intensity of the pain as well as the coloring increases. In an advanced state also a swelling of the area arises.

In my running career I myself had the pleasure to enjoy a shin splint twice. Especially at a multi-day race, you have to react quickly once you detect the first signs, otherwise there will be no next running day: very soon, the skin gets irritated, separates further from the bone and fluid enters between bone and skin. Then the bone is unprotected and a exhaustion fracture can take place.

The following measures have proved to be good for me and many friends of mine.
  • Changing your running style If the irritation is still very new, start immediately to change the running style, so as to change the stress on the foot. In every case, shin splints are connected to an overload of the shin-bone muscle.
  • Implement backward walking Walking backwards from time to time stretches the shin-bone muscle and helps to relax the stressed muscle.
  • Bioplasma A combination of "Schüssler" salts, that contain important information for the cells.
  • White cabbage Now you will probably smile, but many people swear by white cabbage to prevent inflammations. It can be eaten or also be applied directly on the affected area. To apply on the area, take one or two leaves of the white cabbage and flatten them (A rolling pin is good if you have it, to help the cells break up a bit), then you place the leaves on the spot and bandage it. Change the leaves every 6 hours. When I had a shin splint during a 3100 mile race, I put this method successfully to work and after 4 days I could run normally again.
  • harita-shins.jpg
One possible way to tape the shins
Taping If the shin splint gets worse, it is advisable to tape it, so that the ankle will be limited in its movement and the stress will be reduced.
  • Inflammation inhibiting lotions
  • Massage the liquid out If there is already an accumulation of liquid, then it must be massaged out regularly, or the skin cannot grow on the bone.
  • Socks The band of the socks should not be to narrow, otherwise the liquid can stall.andage/tape

Multi-day tips part 5: An equipment checklist

By Smarana Puntigam
27 June

Here is a suggested checklist for an ultra race - This is of course not a complete list, but a selection of helpful items. The links below go to suggested pages on Amazon (this is where we ordered them and as such it might be helpful to you)

  1. Helpers - as a rule of thumb, a good helper can save you anywhere from 2 to 4 miles every day during a multi day race. If you are starting for the first time, it is definitely wise to get helpers who have either done multidays before, or have proved themselves in helping others.
  2. Phone + charger: If you are doing a longer multiday, talking to your friends and family is a really good way to keep you cheered up. If you are travelling abroad, make sure you dont skimp on the phone plan, and that it is sufficient to let you call whoever you need to call, even if it is half way around the world.
  3. Money
  4. Earplugs You may be sharing your sleeping quarters, and earplugs can be of great help if your neighbour is snoring
  5. Sun lotion If you are exposed to the sun the whole day, you need a proper protection factor, factor 30 or higher. For longer multidays, .
  6. hats.jpgCaps to deal with different weather. At least two caps for change and if the sun is beating down all day, it is advisable to have also a cap with neck protection, as the neck is predestined to get over exposed to the sun and here many important nerves run through. Those who get a sunstroke know that you barely can stand on your own feet, let alone run well. You feel a sunstroke even the following day. One such hat can be found here.
  7. Clothing: The amount of trousers, socks, t-shirts etc depends of course on the length of the race.
    - For a 6 day race I would recommend six trousers, 12 t-shirts, two rain jackets, 12 pairs of socks and three pair running shoes.
    - For a 3100 Mile race, compression shorts which might help for chafing
  8. Orthopaedic Inserts: It may happen that the long arch drops after days of running. Therefore it's good to have a support for the middle part of the foot or for the front arch. It's advisable to test the inlays in the training to avoid pressure points in the race. Personally I cannot use inserts, because I get blisters in the front arch, therefore I use metatarsal pillows, which I can stick in the shoe and support the long arch.
  9. Rainclothes and umbrella: An umbrella can be of true help in case of heavy rain. Best to have both a small and bigger umbrella.
  10. Sunglasses
  11. Mp3 player/ipod - it is good to have more than one, and keep the other one charged.
  12. Supplements and medicines: As you do more races, you will find out what works for you. It is also very useful to test supplements in training. I found out that the following food supplements are important for me.
    - Iron, Magnesium, Calcium and a multivitamin compound with a big dose of vitamin C - these supplements should be as much as possible from natural origins.
    - I would like also to point out Arnika in homeopathic form. In grade D4 or also C30 it helps to relax the muscles during running, and is also helpful to reduce swellings in the legs. If you sprain your ankle, Arnika is the best choice.
  13. Lotions: Vaseline is good as ointment for friction areas, once these areas are irritated Vaseline must be avoided. There you should use a calendula lotion to alleviate the irritation, a true blessing with healing effects. Horsebalm for the foot are a true refreshment and the feet are pleasantly fresh.
  14. Toilet Articles and Towels
  15. Powder for feet
  16. Medical items - paper tape, surgical tape, hydrogen peroxide or other disinfectant, toenail cutting kit, moleskin squares, epsom salts, magnesium spray, metatarsal pads, massage oil, zinc oxide cream for rashes.
  17. Scissors and duct tape - something always needs cutting or putting together!

Immortal runners: Emil Zatopek

By Abhinabha Tangerman
18 March

Emil Zatopek is one of those very rare athletes likely to stand the test of time and live on in people’s hearts and minds throughout the centuries. Not merely for his glorious achievements in the running world will he be remembered – of which there are many – but also and especially for his kind, generous and self-giving nature. Zatopek not only won gold medals on the track and on the road, he also won over the hearts of millions of sports fans all over the world.

Emil Zatopek

In his athletic career, which lasted fom 1946 until 1956, Zatopek set eighteen world records and won five Olympic medals. He became the only man in history to hold eight world records at the same time. He held the world record for every distance between 5,000 metres and 30,000 metres. He was the first to break 29 minutes for the 10,000 metres and the first to run 20 kilometres under the hour. Between the years of 1948 and 1954 he won every single 10,000 metres race he entered – an incredible victory streak of 38 wins. But Zatopek is remembered most for his unprecedented sweep at the Helsinki Olympics of 1952, where he became the first and, we may safely assume, the only athlete ever to win a gold medal in all three long distance running races: the 5,000 metres, 10,000 metres and the marathon. Because of these supreme achievements Zatopek is considered by many to be the greatest runner of all times.

Yet Zatopek was not only a great runner, he also was a great innovator. He became one of the first and most certainly the most succesful runner who started using the now widely accepted idea of interval training. When asked for the reason why he would run between 20 and 40 laps around the track on a daily basis, his simple comment was “You must be fast enough – you must have endurance. So you run fast for speed and repeat it many times for endurance.” His profound insight has today become the foundation for any serious athlete’s training program.

Yet above his athletic achievements and greatness as a runner shines his unique, amiable and inimitable personality. Emil Zatopek was indeed loved by all who knew him. He summed up his own life-philosophy in a single, lofty utterance: “Great is the victory, but the friendship of all is greater.” Two anecdotes from his life reveal what a magnanimous and gentle person he was at heart.

In 1966 multi-world-record holder and Australian distance runner Ron Clarke visited Zatopek in Prague, at the height of Clarke’s career. Although Clarke held world records at various distances he had never won a gold medal at the Olympics, the dream of any great runner. When Zatopek dropped him off at the airport at the end of their stay he handed him a small package and said, “Look after this; you deserve it.” When he was alone in the airplane Clarke opened the package and received the surprise of his life! For in front of his eyes was Zatopek’s own gold medal from the Helsinki Olympics 10,000 metre race with an inscription to Clarke.

Zatopek’s main rival in the running world was the Frenchman Alain Mimoun. Although Mimoun was a superb runner he was fated to be an eternal second, always finishing behind Zatopek in almost every race they entered together. Yet in the marathon of the 1956 Melbourne Olympics for the first time of his life Mimoun beat Zatopek in an Olympic race and won the gold medal. Mimoun waited for Zatopek at the finish line, who came in a tired sixth and then asked him, “Emil, why don’t you congratulate me? I have won! I am the Olympic champion!” Mimoun recalls Zatopek’s reaction from memory: “Emil turned and looked at me as if he were waking from a dream. Then he snapped to attention. Emil took off his cap — that white painting cap he wore so much — and he saluted me. Then he embraced me.” When telling the story Mimoun is still overhelmed with emotion. “Oh, for me,” he said, “that was better than the medal.”

Spiritual teacher and running enthousiast Sri Chinmoy has had the good fortune to meet with the immortal Czech runner. He even wrote a book about Zatopek, entitled Emil Zatopek: Earth's Tearing Cry And Heaven's Beaming Smile. Sri Chinmoy concludes his book by a deep and spiritual comment on this champion of champions:

“Zatopek's greatness has surprised mankind. His goodness has illumined mankind. His fullness has elevated mankind.”

Planes, Car & Strongmen Lifted by 75-Year-Old Sri Chinmoy to Inspire Others

page created by Jwalanta Voelckner — last modified 2006-09-22 08:37 PM

New York - Seventy-five-year-old fitness champion and global harmony leader, Sri Chinmoy, has lifted airplanes, huge boulders, a car, a giant pumpkin and 2002 World’s Strongest Man Hugo Girard of Canada—for a total weight of 111,524 pounds. Battling age and injuries during a non-stop three-day lifting marathon, Sri Chinmoy has achieved “the most amazing feats of strength” he has ever seen—according to 5-time Mr. Universe and fitness expert Bill Pearl who witnessed all the lifts.

The extraordinary demonstration of strength, which was also seen by hundreds of people present from around the world, illustrates Sri Chinmoy’s dedication to what he calls “the unlimited potential of the human spirit.” Bill Pearl exclaimed: “75-year-old, 175-pound Sri Chinmoy does the most amazing feats of strength that I have ever seen, regardless of his age and regardless of his size. This is just a very small example of what this gentleman can do with mind over matter.”

Using innovative weightlifting machines that allow Sri Chinmoy to lift human beings and other objects using standard exercises, Sri Chinmoy lifted 350-pound Hugo Girard more than10 times and pressed weights on 21 different weight machines, each utilising different muscles of his arms, legs, chest, and shoulders.

Sri Chinmoy performed several feats of strength during one of bodybuilding’s top contests of the year, the Night of Champions at Town Hall in New York City, including lifting Hugo and Bill Pearl together in a seated calf raise and lifting event organisers Wayne DeMilia and Charles Blake using his shoulder muscles!

Superfit at 74—Sri Chinmoy’s 203 Lb Pioneering Wrist Curls

Sri Chinmoy breaks his own record by curling a colossal 203 lb. dumbbell...

Just one week after curling more than any one else in the world, world fitness champion and international harmony leader Sri Chinmoy (“SHREE CHIN-MOY”), now 74 years old, broke his own record by curling a colossal 203 lb. dumbbell ten times with his right wrist and then ten times with his left wrist. Concentrated in this mega-dumbbell is a weight which is 23 pounds over Sri Chinmoy’s own bodyweight. This is the New Yorker’s top weight with this lift.

Sri Chinmoy states:

“You may wonder why I do such stupid things at the ripe old age of 74! My Inner Pilot, God, is my Inspiration. He is my Aspiration. He is my Protector. I give Him all the credit.”

Asked about his message to others, Sri Chinmoy says,

“Never give up! Never give up! Physical fitness is of paramount importance. There is no age limit when we live in the heart and when we try to be of prayerful and soulful service to God in the heart of humanity.”

The dumbbell is so heavy that it takes two adult assistants just to place the weight on a cradle which is then lowered near Sri Chinmoy’s quadriceps. After the cradle is completely separated and far out of the way, he curls the entire weight with only his wrist muscles. Because the weight is so heavy, Sri Chinmoy feels that he is taking a great risk with the 200 pound dumbbell. In the future, he will practise on a regular basis with 170 lbs.

Jim Smith, long-time Registrar of the British Amateur Weight Lifters Association and an expert on lifting heavy weights exclaimed:

“I am certain that nobody else in the world can do a wrist curl with a 200 pound dumbbell—no matter how old they are or how much they weigh! The strongest men in the world are seeing that a septuagenarian is curing with one arm much more than twice the weight that the world’s best bodybuilders and weightlifters can curl with two arms.”

Five-time Mr. Universe Bill Pearl and holder of the “Best Built Man of the 20th Century” title stated:

“In my more than 60 years in the fitness and bodybuilding field I have never heard of anyone in the world able to curl this huge amount of weight! This is a miracle to me!”

Sri Chinmoy is also known and highly respected internationally for his many activities to foster world harmony, including the World Harmony Run and global humanitarian service.

Bodybuilding’s top magazine, Muscle and Fitness, awarded Sri Chinmoy the second greatest feat of strength for any human being in the past year—lifting 200,873 pounds of weight in one evening at a New York event.

By Jwalanta Voelckner
28 July

International fitness champion and global harmony leader, 74-year-old Sri Chinmoy, has curled a mammoth 256 pound dumbbell with each wrist—by far the heaviest dumbbell ever curled—and he did it 10 times with each hand! Using only the very small wrist muscles, Sri Chinmoy has curled a weight 76 pounds over his own bodyweight.

With his weightlifting Sri Chinmoy hopes to inspire people of all ages with a philosophy of “never give up!” Top strength athletes and fitness experts are astounded at the senior citizen’s herculean achievement. Five-time Mr. Universe and ‘Best Built Man of the Century’ Bill Pearl exclaimed:

“In my more than 60 years in the fitness and bodybuilding field, I have never heard of anyone in the world able to curl this huge amount of weight! This is a miracle!”

In just 3 weeks’ time, Sri Chinmoy has added more than 50 pounds to his own world record. Renowned as an author, musician and artist, Sri Chinmoy explains his meteoric lifting progress and world record success very simply:

“God out of His infinite Bounty has given me the capacity to do this 256 pound wrist curl with each hand. I am placing my happiness-heart- achievement at the Feet of God.”
