Athletics New Zealand 24-Hour Championship, IAU Bronze Label Event

  • The Sri Chinmoy 6-12-24-hour individual races are open to all runners & race-walkers eager to 'challenge the pride of frightening distance'!
  • Athletes, who are currently registered with an Athletics New Zealand affiliated athletic club, are eligible for 24-hour national championship titles/ medals.

  • How far can you as an individual run or run/ walk in 6, 12 or 24 hours?
  • You can run, walk, eat, drink, take small breaks for massage rest etc ... but ultimately, it is up to you to set your goals, challenge impossibility, discover your own potential and embrace what you are capable of achieving and becoming in 6, 12 or 24 hours!
  • Or, become a Kiwi Centurion ... how far can you walk in a day?
  • Join the elite few, that have become New Zealand Centurions, by walking 100 miles (161 km) in a day ... whilst being observed by officials from the New Zealand Centurion Walkers Club.

Stadium Facilities

  • World Athletics/ IAAF certified, floodlit, Rekortan, 400 metre athletics track.
  • Stadium facilities include change rooms, hot showers & toilets (convenient trackside location).
  • Tents are permitted on a designated grass verge area along the western side of the track.

Support For Competitors

  • A wide variety of nutritious easy to digest hot and cold food ... including yummy nibbles and snacks.
  • Hot and cold drinks including Replace electrolyte drink ..... plus lots of friendly support and encouragement.
  • Personal lap counters, regular scoreboard updates.

How far can your 6 person team run, walk or run/ walk in 24 hours?

  • Make up a team from friends, sporting clubs, gyms, workmates, community groups and aquaintances.
  • If you are uncertain of the final composition of your team kindly insert 'To Be Advised" for any unknown team members and email us the names and particulars closer to race day.

Start/ Finish Times

  • Registration & race number/ transponder pick-up is from 8:00 am Saturday.
  • The Sri Chinmoy 24-Hour Teams Relay starts at 9.00 am Saturday 23 September 2023
  • Finish is at 10.00 am Sunday 24 September 2023 (NZL clocks clocks advance 1-hour at 2.00 am on Sun 24 Sep 23 as daylight saving begins).

24-Hour Teams Relay: Rules

  • The Teams Relay is open to all runners and walkers.
  • 6 runners/ walkers per team.
  • Participants must be 18 years of age and over.
  • Each participanrt to complete at least one 1-hour stint ... multiple legs are fine providing each shift is a least 1-hour.
  • Teams are ranked by the total number kilometers completed in 24 hours.

:: Race Day Programme, Rules & Information ::

Kia ora :: Welcome, and all the best as you reach out to explore the roads of self-discovery and self-transcendence.

Directions to AUT Millennium Stadium – 17 Antares Place Mairangi Bay, Auckland

  • From Auckland Central, take the Northern Motorway over the Harbour Bridge and drive 8 km. Take the Upper Harbour Highway exit (after Tristram Road Exit) and turn right into Constellation Drive.
  • Proceed 1.5 km along Constellation Drive and turn left into Apollo Drive (after Ascension Place).
  • Go approximately 800 metres along Apollo Drive, turn right at first roundabout into Antares Place and follow to the AUT Millennium Stadium.

Car parking

  • There is plenty of 24-hour car parking within the Sir Owen Glenn National Aquatic Centre, 15 Antares Place … on the left-hand-side/ adjacent to the track entrance.
  • The Aquatic Centre parking meters operate 7-days from 9.00 am to 6.00 pm. The first 90 minutes are free … $2.00 per hour thereafter (maximum $10.00 per day).
  • Payment is by credit/ debit card or cash

Stadium Access

  • AUT Millennium Stadium will be opened at 7.00 am Saturday 23 Sep 2023 for set-ups, registration etc.

AUT Millennium Stadium Facilities

  • AUT Millennium Stadium is a floodlit, certified 400 metre track & athletics facility.
  • The change rooms, toilets and showers are located at the ground floor of the old clubhouse/ pavilion on the northeastern corner of the stadium … close, easy access during event.
  • You are welcome to set up marquees/ tents in the designated area on the grass verge on the western side of the track … not on the infield!
  • You are also welcome to set up your own tables & chairs in lanes 5-8 in the designated area on the western side of the track – please ensure that the infield is kept clear.

Registration/ T-shirt Pick-up

  • Race numbers, transponders and pre-ordered T-shirts should be picked up at the registration tent, next to the start banner, between 8.00 am - 8.30 am Sat 23 Sep 23.
  • All runners & race-walkers must sign a waiver form.

Electronic Chip timing/ Personal Lap Counters/ Race No. Recorders

We will be using 3 methods to record your laps.

    1. An Active Transponder Chip Timing System.

  • When you register you will also be given a transponder on a velcro strap … please place it around your ankle and proceed to the chip-timing tent to verify that it is working correctly.
  • At the end of the race, when the siren sounds, stop and place your marker-block next to the curb and kindly wait approx. 2-3 minutes for race officials to collect the transponders & velcro straps and measure the part-lap distance
  • In the event of an early withdrawal kindly return your transponders before you depart from the track. (The ‘Active Transponders’ have a replacement cost of approximately $100.00 each)

    2. Personal lap counters

  • Lap recorders will manually record your lap times. After you register please go to the lap counting tent and meet your lap counter.

    3. Chest Number Recorders

  • At the completion of each lap a 2-person team will record your race numbers.
  • You will be provided with 2 race numbers - it is mandatory to wear both numbers and ensure that they are clearly visible at all times.
  • Only wear race numbers in the middle of the chest and back … not on the side, as you will be changing direction every 4-hours.

Team Registration & Relay Rules

  • All team members must sign a separate waiver forms. Team runners, who are not present at the start of the race, must sign a waiver when they arrive … and definitely before they run.
  • Team members must complete at least 1-hour per stint.
  • Each team has 1 transponder … which also serves as the team’s relay baton.
  • Team runners, completing a relay leg, should cross over the chip-timing pads; move into lane 3; remove the Velcro strap/ transponder, hand it to the next team runner, who will place the transponder around their ankle and proceed.
  • The team whose transponder covers the most distance wins the race!

IAU/ World Athletics Standards

  • These races are being conducted using the standards, rules and guidelines of the International Association of Ultra Runners (IAU) under World Athletics (formerly IAAF) patronage.
  • The 2023 Sri Chinmoy 24-Hour Race is hosting the official Athletics New Zealand 24-Hour National Championships.
  • The Sri Chinmoy 24-Hour Race has an IAU Bronze label and the AUT Millennium Stadium track has current AIMS/ IAAF certification.

Running Shoe Stack Height 

  • The International Association of Ultrarunners has ruled that the maximum shoe stack height (road & track) for IAU sanctioned events is 40mm.

Helpers/ Pacing

  • Helpers and supporters are definitely not permitted to walk or run around the track with you.
  • Helpers may speak to you and hand you things … but only in the designated helpers’ zone on the western side of the track.
  • Infringements of this rule will result in participant disqualification.

Guidelines For Use of Lane 1

  • Track etiquette should support the faster runners and race walkers going for world, world age bests and national records or centurion status.
  • All runners and walkers can use lane 1 providing they keep as close to the curb as possible and run or walk in single file.
  • If you wish to run or walk alongside another participant then you must move into lanes 2 or 3.

Start Time

  • Sri Chinmoy 6-12-24-Hr & 24-Hr Teams Race: 9.00 am Sat 23 Sep 2023
  • A short introduction/ briefing will be held about 5 minutes before the start.

Headsets/ Music

  • Headsets are not to be used during the first 15 minutes and final 15 minutes of each race.

Food and Drink Station

  • The food and drink tent will be located on the northeast infield of the track … opposite the old clubhouse/ pavilion.
  • The aid station will have hot water and a microwave facilities.
  • A wide range of nutritious hot and cold, easy to digest vegetarian food (plus various nibbles) will be provided for participants throughout the races.
  • Water, Replace electrolyte drink, herbal teas, regular teas, coffee, coke and hot chocolate will be available.

Direction Changes

  • There will be a direction change approximately every 4 hours after the 9.00 am start … that is 1.00 pm, 5.00 pm, 9.30 pm (Sat) and 1.00 am, 6.00 am (Sun).

Awards Ceremonies

The awards ceremonies will be held approximately 30 minutes after the finish of each race.

  • 24-hour runners, who are currently registered with affiliated Athletics N.Z clubs, are eligible for Athletics New Zealand National Championship titles and medals.
