"Defending champion Virendra Gauthier successfully held off Brooklyn challengers Euchrist Leid and Bill McNerney as he won the Sri Chinmoy 4-Mile Run, Breezy Point, Brooklyn (June 24, 1984). Gauthier, who bettered his '83 time by 27 seconds with his 20:12 clocking, had just one week earlier won the Sri Chinmoy Father's Day Marathon in 2:35+. Runners-up Leid and McNerney both base their running in college track - Leid is a Brooklyn college alum, McNerney currently runs for Hold Cross College.
The tight lead pack remained intact through the first 5:01 mile when Gauthier began picking up the pace. Leid stuck with him through mile three, falling off pace in the heat generated by the dense coastal foliage. Unaffected, Gauthier pressed on to finish 100 metres clear of his challenger. McNerney, trailing in third, barely missed edging Leid to finish 20:24 to Leid's 20:23.
Recent Brown College graduate Ann Dolan added another win to her already successful summer season in a time of 25:17. Ann recently took second in the Prospect Park summer speed series 5K behind fleet Monica Scarborough. Runnerup for the 4-mile event was 14-year-old Hillary Greene, a promising young athlete from Hancock, MA. Hillary's time was 25:41.
Rusty Lamade, 47, running for Staten Island AC led the vets in 20:09 with Walter Vinson from the Bronx second in 22:34. Al Puma, of Witolds Runners, Brooklyn, took first master in 25:43. Maurice Goldberg, 61, a Flatland resident who manages to train in the offhours of his Brooklyn based business, was first senior in a spry 26:30. Prospect Park TC teammates Joan O'Reilly and Regina Nicora swept the et and masters categories with their respective 30:42 and 33:02 clockings.
Of special note was the friendly competition between ultra runner Trishul Cherns of the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team and veteran racewalker Mort Malkin of the Metropolitan Racewalkers, Brooklyn. Cherns, in a calculated move to avoid Malkin's awesome kick, pushed hard to establish an early lead. His reward - a 34:14 clocking over friend Malkin's 36:09.
