The start of the Eleventh Annual Ten Day race was greeted by crisp, clear breezy weather as 22 intrepid runners‑ 11 men and 11 women‑ started on their 240‑hour journey. Rimas Jakelaitis,51,race record holder, strode out front Immediately to a quick pace‑ he went through 50 miles in 9:26:44, even after a few breaks and changes of clothes. Rimas ran most of the night and reached 111 miles for the first day. Barney McBryde from New Zealand looked well‑trained, running 93 smooth miles.Pavol Saraz,from Slovakia reached 81 as wellas Vladimir Balatsky. Defending women's champ Nataliya Hluschek looked fit as ever, reaching 83 miles, but was edged by Russian Pratishruti Khisamoutdinova who ran 84 miles just before the first day ended.
