Five-time Olympian Miles-Clark makes history, too
Jearl Miles-Clark become a five time Olympian
By winning the women's 800 meters July 12 at the U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials, Jearl Miles-Clark has become a five-time Olympian.
Clark was selected to the 4x400m relay pool for the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, although she did not compete. In 1992, she ran the third leg on the silver medal-winning 4x400m relay team, and also competed in the 400 meters. In 1996, she anchored the relay to gold and was fifth in the 400. In 2000, she ran opening leg on the gold medal-winning 4x400m and ran in the 800 meters.
The U.S. Olympic Committee this week clarified that Miles-Clark's selection to the relay pool makes her a 1988 Olympian.
The American record holder at 800 meters and the 1993 world champion at 400 meters, Miles-Clark at age 37 is joined on the 2004 Olympic roster by fellow five-time, 37-year-old Olympian Gail Devers.
Distance-running legend Francie Larrieu-Smith also qualified for five Olympic Teams - 1,500m in 1972, '76 and '80; 10,000m; in 1988 and marathon in 1992 - although she did not compete in 1980 due to the Olympic boycott.
