Olympic champions Joanna Hayes, Tim Mack and Allen Johnson all
were victorious in their respective events Sunday at the final event of
this year's IAAF Golden League series, the ISTAF 2004 in Berlin,
Germany.
The gold medalist at the 2004 Olympic Games in the women's 100m hurdles, Hayes led from the first hurdle through to the finish in posting the second fastest time of her career with her win Sunday in 12.46 seconds. Hayes's career best time of 12.37 seconds on August 19 won her the Olympic gold medal in Athens. 2004 Olympic silver medalist Olena Krasovska of the Ukraine was the runner-up in 12.66.
In the men's pole vault, 2004 Olympic champion Tim Mack and fellow American Derek Miles each cleared 5.80 meters/19 feet, 0.25 of an inch in taking the top two spots. Mack was declared the winner having cleared 5.80m on his first attempt, with Miles clearing the bar on his third attempt at that height.
1996 Olympic gold medalist and four-time world outdoor champion Allen Johnson got back on the winning track in the men's 110m hurdles. Johnson was in command throughout, winning in 13.16 seconds, with Jamaican Maurice Wignall the runner-up in 13.27.
Americans with strong runner-up performances in Berlin included Amy Acuff in the women's high jump (2.00 meters/6 feet, 6.75 inches), and Walter Davis in the men's triple jump (17.21m/56-5.75). Christian Olsson of Sweden won the men's triple jump (17.45m/57-3), and in so doing won half of the 2004 IAAF Golden League one-million dollar jackpot. Olsson split the prize with 2004 Olympic gold medalist Tonique Williams-Darling of the Bahamas, who won the women's 400 meters in 49.07 seconds.
