The Self Transcendence 100k Race offers an ideal opportunity for distance runners to complete what is now the internationally recognised ultra distance of 100km (62.2 miles). This will be the 13th 100km race we have organised in Edinburgh. It attracts some of the best ultra runners in the UK who will be challenging for championship medals and possible GB selection. However, what we, the organisers, also find inspiring every year are the runners who challenge themselves to finish the distance inside the 12 hour time limit or merely see what distance they can cover. Long time observers of the ultra scene all agree that anyone with a solid background of endurance events either on the road or the hills can, with only slight modifications to training, successfully complete a 100km event. Just as important are a cheerful and determined attitude which sweeps aside any doubts about what one can achieve. We therefore welcome any novice ultra-runners keen to challenge themselves, and will offer a modest prize for the best performance by a newcomer.

Venue and facilities

The course is approximately a 2 mile loop in the campus of Heriot-Watt University on the southern outskirts of Edinburgh. New road building on the campus has given us the opportunity to change the course slightly from previous years, hopefully making for an improved course. We will post a map on this site as soon as the course has been finalised and officially measured.

Back-up facilities

Full refreshments and medical back up will be available at the Sports Centre each lap. Competitors are welcome to bring their own handler. Our experienced counting crew will individually record each lap and also everyone’s split time at 50km will be recorded. Our refreshment crew have established a reputation for usually being able to find that little something to inspire runners to keep going, either by way of sustenance or encouragement. Regular drinking is obviously essential, so also are regular small intakes of solid food. We will offer fruit (including bananas), bread with jam or honey, chocolate, cakes etc. Drinks will include carbohydrate drinks, tea, coffee, water and coke. Runners are welcome to bring their own drinks and food which should be clearly labelled and left at the refreshment area. A post race meal of pasta will be provided to all runners free of charge. Runner’s helpers/family/friends will be welcome to take lunch for a small charge.
