The 2007 Self Transcendence 24 Hour Track Race will take place on 6 & 7 October (12 Noon start) at Tooting Bec Athletics Track, London

Before the race, Tarit Adrian Stott (one of the runners, and a former winner of this event) penned this short tribute to his great friend, Ongkar Tony Smith, who was Race Director of the 24 Hour Race from its inception right up to 2004.

Race Information for the Event:

STATUS OF THE EVENT

The race is held under permit from the South of England Athletic Association and organised to RRC and IAU standards regarding measurement of circuit, lap counting and ratification of records. The race is organised by Sri Chinmoy A.C.

VENUE & FACILITIES

The race will be held on the track at Tooting Bec, Tooting Bec Road, London SW17. The track is 400m. outdoor all weather ‘Tartan’ with floodlighting. There are ample changing rooms and showers together with rest facilities immediately adjacent to the track. Light refreshments, including tea, coffee, juice, electrolytic drinks, biscuits, chocolate, fruit and sandwiches will be available on the track throughout the duration of the race. In addition hot food will be available at the main meal times (i.e. Saturday lunch, supper and Sunday breakfast). A hot meal will also be provided at the Post Race Function. Meals will be available for handlers at extra cost. Medical back up will be available from Saturday evening till the end of the race. A team of lap counters will record every lap for each runner. Split times will be taken at all major intermediary distances for the lead runners.

AWARDS

Trophies will be awarded to the first seven finishers, the first three veterans over 50, the first two veterans over 60 and all lady finishers. Medals and certificates will be presented to all finishers. All awards will be presented at the Post Race Function.

RACE DAY DETAILS

On the morning of the race the runners are welcome to arrive at Tooting Bec Track any time from 9:30am and not later than 11am if possible. Tooting Bec track is located on the A214 Tooting Bec Road. The nearest station is Tooting Bec ( London Underground – Northern Line) and buses 246 and 349 pass by.

Facilities at Tooting Bec include:

Indoor rest and changing areas

Indoor toilets and showers

Ample car parking and tent space available on the outer perimeter of, but adjacent to, the track. (No vehicles or tents will be allowed on the in-field of the track)

Indoor lounge area for helpers.

Race Facilities:

The direction of the race will be changed every four hours

Hot and cold drinks and refreshments station trackside

Trackside toilets

Hourly changed leader and mileage board

Physiotherapists and masseurs available

Post race meal and presentations at 1pm on Sunday the 15th

We will be providing the following hot vegetarian meals – Saturday lunch and supper, Sunday breakfast and post – race meal. These meals are also available to runners free of charge. Runner’s handlers are also very welcome to partake of these meals so long as they are booked and paid for in advance (please use the form enclosed with your race entry acceptance). Trackside refreshments in the form of tea, coffee, juice, energy drinks, biscuits and fruit will be available throughout the race.

The Competitor’s Medical Record should be completed shortly before race day and it is fine to bring it with you on the day (as long as you don‘t have any serious conditions), just don‘t forget!

There will be physiotherapists in attendance at the race led by Joy Walter Msc MCSP, who has served the race well in the past. She strongly recommends that you bring a helper with you who can monitor your liquid intake during the event.

We have a very promising field this year, with quite a few European runners, making it an international field. We are very much looking forward to seeing you at the race, which we hope will be a great success for everyone.
