Edinburgh runners know when spring is really here when the Meadows Self-Transcendence race series starts. 100 runners lined up on a cool, but sunny evening for the first race (5k) in the 24th year of this popular simple series.

Orienteering international Murray Strain (HBT) led from the start going through 1 mile in 4.55 with Shettleston’s Stewart Greenway giving chase (4.57) and a chasing pack led by Al Anthony in 5.02.  Cath Ferry was leading lady at the mile in 5.53.

Strain continued to stretch his lead going through 2 miles in 9.57 to Greenway’s 10.02 and stretched his lead to 13 secs at the finish.  Hill running specialist Anthony was a clear third.

Cath Ferry had a shock to find Kilbarchan’s Hannah Waugh on her shoulder going down the finishing stretch but held on by a second.

Special mention to Fundo Mhura (Commonwealth Games boxing representative) who showed he is also a useful runner by finishing 6th place.

Magic moment:  Ailsa Baker, four months old, who took part in her first race pushed in her buggy by mum and dad, Duncan and Emma, to claim a Meadows 5k record in a buggy.
