Self Transcendence 2 mile, edinburgh, Scotland, 21 may 08
With Championship league fever sweeping Europe, 68 runners lined up for the 2 mile race in the Meadows for the fourth Self Transcendence race of the summer.
At the mile mark HBT's Murray Strain and Ray Ward went through along with Kilbarchan's Paul Arcari in 4.53. Kim Threadgall (EAC) was 1st lady in 5.50.
Magic (and confusing) moment!:
Approaching the finish, Ward held a 10 metre lead over Arcari, who in turn was a few metres in front of Strain. Ward suddenly pulled up 10 metres before the line clutching his hamstring and Arcari seemed to stop, thinking Ward had reached the finish line. In the confusion, Strain came past both of them! Arcari then realised his mistake, recovered his composure and crossed the finish line just ahead of Strain, who also seemed to ease up before the line! All three recorded negative splits.
The women's finish was more straightforward with Kim Threadgall (11.32) a clean winner over Central's young junior, Roisin Bonucchi.
Special moment:
Isobel Knox (Issy) showed real self transcendence having run her first 100km race (that's right 62.2 miles) on Sunday in Cardiff and she was still sprightly enough 3 days later to finish 4th female in 13.12!
