17 Oct. 04: Top Field Expected For Auckland Self-Transcendence Race
If the number and the quality of pre-race entries is any guide, a top field is expected in Auckland for the Self-Transcendence 5 & 10 km race next weekend.
Race director Simahin Pierce is more than satisfied with the way the race is tracking, and says that interest from the local running community is amongst the highest he has ever seen, predicting a closely fought battle.
One of the leading contenders for the 10km title is Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team member Tim Cranfield of Wellington, a winner of previous Self-Transcendence races. A letter carrying postal delivery officer by day, Tim has posted some very competitive times in training, and pronounces himself quietly confident with regards to the impending race.
"My training's been going well—a mixture of speed work and long distances on the roads—as well as a new element that I've only just introduced to my schedule—actually running the mail route, which I feel has significantly added to my endurance base."
The race course is located at the picturesque inner city Auckland Domain, a landmark public recreation area which was dedicated by Sri Chinmoy and civic leaders during the Marathon Team founder's visit to New Zealand in 1987.
