Cameron Brown Poised to Crack Kona

Cameron Brown, New Zealand's number one ranked ironman triathlete, will be hoping to transcend his previous achievements in tomorrow's ironman triathlon world championship in Kona-Kailua, Hawaii – even if only by one place.

Brown, who has placed second, third and third over the past three years at world championships, will be hoping to go one better and emulate the exploits of his silver fern wearing compatriots Hamish Carter and Bevan Docherty, who won gold and silver respectively in the Olympic Triathlon this August.

"It was fantastic what Hamish and Bevan achieved at Athens and it would be great to cap it off here," said Brown.

The Kiwi champion is confident after what has been his best ever build-up for Hawaii event, and is counting upon his trademark 2h 45m marathon as a key weapon in his battle for the title.

At age 32, the native of Auckland is considered to be one of the top contenders in the pro-elite section of the race, along with two-time winners Tim DeBloom of the United States and Peter Reid of Canada.

Five more New Zealanders will contest the race along side Brown in the 42 degree centigrade heat. They are two-time Malaysia ironman winner Bryan Rhodes, Stephen Sheldrake of Gisborne, Gordo Bryn and Chris MacDonald of Christchurch, and Aucklander Kieran Doe, an extremely promising under-23 triathlete.
