Yerrabi/Goorooyarroo Race Report 2005

Each forward determination-stride
Is a new victory.
-Sri Chinmoy

Saturday 10 September 2005 saw the inaugural running of a brand new event, the Yerrabi/Goorooyarroo Multi-Sport race. The race featured running, kayaking, mountain biking, and more running, with short and long-course options. The weather wasn't entirely kind, alternating between light drizzle and more substantial precipitation, though Canberra can certainly use the rain.

Yerrabi Pond is a nice little spot, about 1300m long and about 300m wide, situated in an outer suburb. The short and long course started at the same time, running off in opposite directions around the pond. The paddle leg featured one or two loops of the pond, under bridges and around a little island. Next came the mountain bike, which left the pond area to explore the farther reaches of the Goorooyarroo Nature Reserve. Then, another run around the pond.

James Scott was the first home in the short course in a time of 1:19:03, and Sue Ferguson was the first woman across the line in 1:27:36. "I Think I Can" was the first (and only) all-male team in 1:27:20, followed by "3 Chicks"), the first (and only) female team, in 1:45:38.

In the long course, Tom Landon-Smith was first in 2:00:19. Astonishingly, there were no female solo competitors! "Defence College" showed military discipline in winning the mixed teams with  2:12:46.

It was a wet, rainy finish for all, though this didn't seem to diminish the good spirits of the athletes. After the race, everyone retreated to the picnic shelter for fresh pancakes. We hope to see everyone who entered again next month, for the inaugural Googong Challenge!
