Sri Chinmoy Off-Road Triathlon Course Description

Swim - The swim begins with a deep-water start off the beach between Yarralumla Bay and Blue Gum Point. Swim directly across to the southern tip of Black Mountain Peninsula.

Mountain Bike - The mountain bike leg heads north-east from the compound on a small dirt track which joins the road after a few hundred metres. Then follow the road out to Lady Denman Dr and turn right. Lady Denman Dr becomes Clunies Ross St and passes underneath Parkes Way. Turn left onto the road heading up Black Mountain.

Look for the first right hand turn opposite the water reservoir on your left, heading over a gate and onto a dirt track. Follow this around behind the National Botanic Gardens until you come to a gate which you cross. You will come out on a lower road which you follow only for a few metres before turning sharp left to head back through another gate back into Black Mountain Reserve.

Follow this main dirt road uphill and turn right at the first opportunity. Ignore the next turn off to your left and continue to your right onto the fast, scenic loop around Little Black Mountain. After the hairpin turn to your left, do not take any of the turn-offs heading to your right or left. Instead continue through a few small ups and downs and looping arounds.

This track undulates around Black Mountain with the mountain on your left for several kilometres. Turn to your right when you come to a fork, joining with a lower track near to the new Gungahlin Drive Extension works. Look for the turn-off to your right leading onto the cycle path which you will follow to your right (heading north).

Turn left off the cycle path into the underpass under William Hovell Dr, then left again through the gate into the Cork Oak Plantation. Follow the single track all the way around the cork oaks, coming out at another gate into the old Stromlo Forest.

Turn right at the main road here, heading straight up hill. Go to the right at the fork, then turn left heading toward Dairy Farmers Hill and climb to the summit of Dairy Farmers. After the initial short descent, turn left and follow the longer descent until you turn right at the 'Road Closed' sign. Take the next hairpin turn to your left, then right again at the T-junction at the bottom. Look for the track heading under the underpass of Tuggeranong Parkway on your left. Follow the single tracks on the other side, then the larger forest tracks. Look for a left hand turn which will bring you out at the ford of the Molonglo River.

After crossing the causeway, there is a short sharp climb then go straight across the cycle path and up the dirt track on the other side, following the signs to Yarralumla Camping Area. Follow this track past equestrian enclosures, turning left at the gravel road, through the gate, then left again onto the shoulder of Cotter Rd.

From the shoulder the course heads onto the grass beside Cotter Rd, crossing over Lady Denman Dr just down from the roundabout, then following a dirt track just above the golf course, to cross over Dunrossil Dr. Look for a singles track that leads around a wooden post into the forest on the other side of Dunrossil Dr, following it around to the left at the fork, hugging the golf course fenceline, finding the brickworks chimney directly ahead, then emerging into the bottom of Lane Poole Pl.

Turn right at the top of Lane Poole Pl, then immediately left onto the grass beside the fence, heading down past some CSIRO Forest Research buildings to turn right onto Wilf Crane Cres, left into Banks St, and right into Brown St, which becomes Alexandrina Dr and the run home.

Run – From the cycle compound, follow the cycle path heading west. After crossing the 2nd small bridge, turn left on the cycle path following the storm water drain. Turn left onto the concrete path just before reaching the road, and left again onto the grass beside Maiden St. Follow the track around to the right behind the houses, following the line of houses until just before Hopetoun Cct. After crossing a small ditch, turn left onto a concrete path, then right onto the grass leading to Hopetoun Cct.

Cross straight over Hopetoun Cct, onto the single-track heading up into the trees, veering left at the main track heading uphill. Follow this track straight to the top and along Stirling Ridge, ignoring other tracks merging from the left and right. The track eventually dips, and with the mosque to your right, emerges past a gate. Turn left onto the grass beside Empire Cct, then right onto the grass beside Forster Cres.

Turn left onto the walking path opposite Darwin Ave, which comes out at Alexandrina Dr. Cross Alexandrina Dr heading to your left, through the trees, crossing both the cycle path and the road into the yacht club beside where the TACT races start. Follow the walking path adjacent to the lakeshore, over the rocky outcrop. Continue hugging the shoreline, past the poplars and across some more rocky terrain.

Veer from the lake’s edge at the little rise into the small dirt carpark, crossing it to continue along the walking path all the way back to the beach at Yarralumla Bay. Follow the beach past the finish compound. Turn left near the toilet block, then left again into the finish chute.
