Leg 7 - Mountain Bike 11 km
The 2nd mountain bike course is a complete contrast to the 1st. It is technically not difficult, over gently undulating terrain on mostly well-formed farm tracks. Please note that cyclists MUST carry their own water or other replacement fluid.
After climbing the fence at Hatchery Bay, the next challenge is to negotiate the 700
metres or so around the shoreline to Minnehaha Point. This
section has no clearly defined track, so simply follow the beach or
rocky shoreline (depending on the level of the lake) around to your
left until you reach a small beach.
From this beach at Minnehaha Inlet, follow the
4WD farm track north to Hayshed Bay. Curve to your left around
Hayshed Bay, then to your right through the gateless posts. After
the gateless posts, veer immediately to your left at the Y fork,
heading up and away from the water.
This track brings you up to an intersection near the old barn, with the
main dirt road (Michaels & Glengarry Rd) coming in from Kosciuszko
Rd. Turn right here and follow the road downhill, back towards
the lake. Turn left at the fork, following the sign to
"Michaels." Pass the house and yard surrounded by pine trees on
your left. The track then sweeps to your left in front of the
water at Cooley Bay. After a few hundred metres take the right
hand fork, followed almost immediately by a left fork. The track
climbs gradually to crest a ridge with spectacular views all
around, then starts to dip.
Veer left at the first fork, this track bringing you eventually down to
the water on the southern shore of Creel Bay, directly opposite the
mountain swim 3/paddle 3 transition point. Turn left at
the water and climb the stile over the ragged fence. Continue around the shore
another 100 metres and look for posts with distinctive yellow 'cable
marker' signs, up on your left. Head towards them. Follow
these markers virtually in a straight line up hill, though the track
may be somewhat overgrown. Climb one barbed wire fence, and
continue following the yellow markers until you reach another
fence. Climb the gate here and follow this track to your left a
few hundred metres to the intersection near the old barn.
Turn right here and follow Michaels/Glengarry Rd a few hundred metres more till you reach the transition point under a tree on your right, at the intersection with the quarry road.
