Low Level of Googong Reservoir
Following the January 2003 bushfires which severely affected the water quality of reserves in Bendora, Corin and Cotter Dams, Googong became the exclusive water supply to Canberra. The subsequent years of drought had left the reservoir at its lowest-ever point, just under 30% of capacity.
Water levels were at 40% for the inaugural race in 2005, and had risen to 50% in early October 2006, with the water above the bottom of the boat ramp. Now that
water from other dams is once again being processed and used for
Canberra's water supply, and water is being pumped into Googong, the pressure on Googong has eased and it is
hoped the water level will now start to rise with future rains.
Nevertheless there is plenty enough water to enjoy a decent paddle.
